West Ham became the first Premier League side to return to pre-season training on Monday as they began preparations for next week’s Europa League first qualifying round.

The large majority of West Ham’s first-team squad including the likes of Diafra Sakho and James Tomkins were joined by several academy members as new boss Slaven Bilic put his side through their paces.

Earlier on Monday, Bilic learned that his side will start their season Europa League campaign against FC Lusitans in Andorra on July 2.

The UEFA draw paired West Ham with Lusitans for a first-leg match more than five weeks before the Barclays Premier League kicks off with the return match to be played at Upton Park on July 9.

And should West Ham progress to the second round they will face either Birkirkara from Malta or Armenian side Ulisses. Those matches will be played on July 16 and July 23.

West Ham joined 101 teams in the first-round draw on Monday as reward for England being awarded an extra place through UEFA’s fair play rankings last season.

A further 13 teams joined in the second qualifying round draw which was made later Monday.

Despite having their holidays cut short but European involvement, Senegalese striker insists that his team-mates are raring to go and has his sights set of 20 goals next season.

He told West Ham’s official website: ‘I am happy to be back and see all the players. I would like to score 20 goals next season.’

Academy products Elliot Lee and Reece Oxford were amongst the younger faces involved in the training session as they looked to make an early impression ahead of next season.
