ROHAN BANERJEE: Barcelona defender Gerard Pique admits that he can understand team-mate Pedro Rodriguez’ frustration with a lack of first-team starts, but says he wants him to remain at the club.

The 27-year-old forward, who is a graduate of Barca’s famous La Masia academy, did make 50 appearances in all competitions last season, but the majority of them came from the bench with elite striking trio Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi usually selected ahead of him.

‘I understand that a player like Pedro wants to have more minutes,’ Pique said at a press conference on Sunday night, ‘He’s been a world champion, won many trophies in Barcelona but is behind three of the best players in the world.’

CHARLES SALE: England’s prize talent Raheem Sterling will be an improved player from his acrimonious £49million move to Manchester City, believes his national team manager Roy Hodgson.

Sterling performing at the height of his powers is crucial for England’s chances both at Euro 2016 and on the way to Russia in 2018. And after the World Cup qualifying draw in St Petersburg, Hodgson stressed the importance of a maturing Sterling to a side whose stand-out opponents will be the auld enemy.

Hodgson said: ‘We have a lot of faith in Raheem Sterling. He has never been out of our thoughts at any time, whether or not he has been playing well, in his club team or not. We have always had him in our 25 as a player for the future who we think, if we are ever going to become a really good team, we need players like him because of his exceptional talent.’

JOHN DOWNES: Inter Milan’s star striker Mauro Icardi has revealed that La Liga giants Real Madrid made an approach to land him earlier this summer.

The Argentine, who finished joint top Serie A scorer last season with 22 goals, alongside Verona’s veteran hitman Luca Toni, has claimed that Rafa Benitez’s side tried to lure him to the Bernabeu ahead of the new season.

‘Real Madrid tried to sign me,’ Icardi was quoted as saying by AS.

‘But I am happy to have signed a new deal with Inter; we want to return to the Champions League next season.’

SAMI MOKBEL: Blackburn Rovers are interested in former Holland Under 21 midfielder Jeffrey Sarpong.

JACK BRIDEN: Wolfsburg hotshot Kevin De Bruyne is unsure where his future lies after this summer amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

The 24-year-old arrived at the Bundesliga outfit for £18million from Chelsea in January 2014, after apparently failing to convince Blues boss Jose Mourinho of his abilities.

The young Belgian has since flourished in Germany, becoming last season’s Bundesliga Player of the Year and recording the most assists in the German league.

When asked if he would be tempted by a move away from the Volkswagen Arena De Bruyne told Kicker: ‘I don’t know where I will play next season.

‘I just have to train well and make sure that I am fully fit. We will then see what happens.’

When Brighton and Hove Albion are signing players from Real Madrid you know something’s up in the transfer market.

Scotland Under 19 international Jack Harper’s move to the Championship side is part of a growing trend that has also seen 22-year-old Real B team defender Derik Osede sign for Bolton this summer and Cristian Benavente moving from Madrid to Milton Keynes Dons.

Barcelona’s 19-year-old Moroccan winger Moha El Ouriachi has joined Stoke and another of the club’s promising forwards Adama Traore is wanted by Bayern Munich’s former Barca coach Pep Guardiola. West Ham want 19-year-old playmaker Alen Halilovic too. And Everton, who have already taken Barca B winger Gerard Deulofeu, are also interested in the Croat.

CRAIG HOPE: Newcastle United remain interested in signing Charlie Austin and the Queens Park Rangers striker favours a move to St James’ Park.

Sources close to the Magpies have indicated to Sportsmail that a game of ‘brinkmanship’ between the two clubs is delaying the deal, with Newcastle unwilling to pay the £15million asking price.

Indeed, it is a long-standing shoulder problem that United remain most wary about.

We’ve had a message from David, a Liverpool fan in Botswana, who is unhappy with Liverpool’s transfer business so far this season.

He says: ‘It is painful to hear of possibilities of obtaining Reus or Benzema, when the squad seems light defensively in terms of recruitment. All our bitter rivals are extremely strong in the defensive departments.

ROB DRAPER: John Terry has revealed he aims to play for Chelsea for at least two more years and insisted he will not follow the example of Petr Cech and Frank Lampard by playing for another Barclays Premier League club.

The captain, 34, who has been with Chelsea since he was a schoolboy, will remain a one-club man in England at least — though he hopes he will be able to finish his career at Stamford Bridge.

Terry said: ‘If I felt Chelsea were going to release me or thought I had nothing else to give but I thought I could, then of course I would still want to continue to play. But that would not be in the Premier League, for sure.’

He’s been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, but speaking yesterday Steve McClaren has backed Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini to stay at St James’ Park.

KIERAN GILL: Sergio Ramos is reportedly ‘very close’ to signing a new contract with Real Madrid ‒ a move which would kill Louis van Gaal’s attempts to lure the defender to Manchester United this summer.

Florentino Perez is currently in China, where Ramos and his team-mates are on their pre-season tour, and the club president is to hold talks with the 29-year-old over a new deal.

Spanish newspaper Marca have dedicated their front page on Monday to the transfer saga, and report that Perez will sort out Ramos’ future before turning his attention to David de Gea.

GEORGE GRANT: Everton boss Roberto Martinez has refused to rule out making a move to sign Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking after watching his English Premier League side record a 3-1 friendly win over Hearts at Tynecastle, the Spaniard confessed he is in the market for a new central defender.

While being unwilling to speak directly about van Dijk, Martinez is reportedly willing to pay Celtic’s £10million asking price.

IAN LADYMAN: Louis van Gaal has revealed Manchester United are still in the hunt for one more star attacking player but has ruled out an Old Trafford return for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward spent six years at the club under Sir Alex Ferguson before moving to Real Madrid for £80million in 2009.

And he has been linked with a move back to the Barclays Premier League in light of his apparent differences with new Bernabeu boss Rafa Benitez.

United manager Van Gaal, who is believed to be closing in on a deal to sign £22m Pedro from Barcelona, said: ‘Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis]Suarez. We have to look also for that kind of player.’

United fans would love to see favourite Ronaldo back at the club but the Dutchman added: ‘That’s not possible because you have the club, Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much United want to spend.’

ROB DRAPER: Chelsea are ready to make a renewed £26million bid for Everton defender John Stones with hope that a deal can be tied up before Sunday’s Community Shield.

Everton are maintaining their stance that the player is not for sale but there is an expectation that the player’s desire to speak to Chelsea and the increased offer will persuade them to do business.

Relations between the two clubs have suffered over the past week with Chelsea bewildered by Roberto Martinez’s complaints while Everton were stung by Gary Cahill’s comments urging the 21-year-old to join the Premier League champions.
