DAMASCUS, Syria – Syria has accused U.N. special envoy Staffan de Mistura of bias and says his recent statements condemning deadly government airstrikes on Douma show he lacks objectivity.
Government air raids on Sunday killed nearly 100 people in the eastern Damascus suburb of Douma, making it one of the deadliest such incidents since Syria’s crisis began in March 2011. The airstrikes hit a vegetable market in the suburb, which is a stronghold of the Islam Army rebel group.
De Mistura said in a statement Monday that hitting crowded civilian markets is “unacceptable.”
The Syrian government statement published Tuesday by the state-run news agency SANA said de Mistura’s statement were far from objective and showed he relied only on “propaganda circulated within circles known for their hostility to Syria.”
