Recent reports suggest that Manchester City’s Ferran Torres could be one of the first names in the door under the new regime at the Camp Nou, with Spanish outlets Marca and Mundo Deportivo claiming Torres has the blessing of Pep Guardiola to return to Spain.
But amidst all the expectations of who is coming to Catalunya under the iconic former Blaugrana midfielder, bigger questions surrounding what players currently plying their trade in the Catalan capital remain part of Xavi’s long term plans at Barcelona. One of them is French international Ousmane Dembélé.
“I spoke with him & made my stance clear – how important he is for us in the long run. But it depends on him and his environment. He tells me that he is happy, so hopefully he renews because he can make a difference. It’s his choice.”
Spanish youngster also on valued list at Barcelona
Dembélé is not the only player that Xavi wishes to keep at the Camp Nou as the hopeful project in Barcelona gets off the ground.
Spanish U21 international and La Masia graduate Riqui Puig is also on the list of players the Barcelona manager hopes to make as part of the new core of players under his command despite finding minutes hard to come by this season under Ronald Koeman.
“Riqui Puig is like another player in our team. We count on him, like everyone else, and he will have his opportunities. He has a lot of talent.”
It is becoming increasingly clear that Xavi intends to build Barcelona for the long term. While some high-level stars in their prime are being targeted, youthful exuberance with long-term potential could well be the official remit of the Xavi regime moving forward.
