Wolves kit deal

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal with 4-year-old UK sportswear brand Castore to produce their kits for the 2021/22 league campaign. The deal required Wolves to cancel their current deal with Adidas which lasted until 2022.

Castore will pay £1 million a season in comparison to the previous £3 million a season paid by Adidas. A £2 million a season difference in the deals may seem initally strange however, it is likely incentives within the deal help to close the gap and even benefit Wolves more.

The Castore brand is still new but has aspirations to supply some of the biggest clubs in the game. Already a supplier of Scottish club Rangers, a deal worth supposedly around £25 million, Newcastle United and Roma have been touted as possible ventures.

Tennis superstar Andy Murray is an investor in the company. The Scottish athlete is an Arsenal fan but also backs his national side and was seen celebrating the Scot’s win over Serbia to secure qualification for the European Championships in 2020.

The biggest deals

Whilst Wolves may be getting incentives on top of the £1 million a season deal from Castore, it is dwarfed by some of the world’s biggest kit deals.

As of the start of 2020, Sportcal ranked the top 20 sportswear deals. The top 10 was comprised of 5 Premier League clubs, two Spanish clubs and one from France, Germany and Italy.

  1. Barcelona – Nike – $174,830,000
  2. Real Madrid – Adidas – $134,340,000
  3. Manchester United – Adidas – $101,200,000
  4. PSG (From 2022) – Nike – $98,150,000
  5. Manchester City – Puma – $86,360,000
  6. Arsenal – Adidas – $78,680,000
  7. Chelsea – Nike – $73,450,000
  8. Bayern Munich – Adidas – $67,090,000
  9. Juventus – Adidas – $58,000,000
  10. Liverpool – New Balance – $41,000,000

However, since, Liverpool have reached a deal with Nike which made them a reported £30 million a season. With Nike one of the market leaders, despite the initial deal worth less, the rewards in the long-term could prove more lucrative for the Reds.

New Balance look to strike back with a reported pursuit of current Nike athlete Raheem Sterling.
