Why Mauro Icardi’s move to PSG could be bad news for Barcelona

Mauro Icardi leaves Inter, signs for PSG

A major European transfer has been completed on Sunday between Inter Milan and PSG, as Mauro Icardi has secured a permanent a move to the French capital.

Mauro Icardi had been on loan at PSG this season from Inter.

Icardi has played 31 times for PSG, scoring 20 goals and chalking up 4 assists.

Now, PSG have exercised an option to sign the 27-year-old Argentine striker on a permanent deal.

On Sunday PSG confirmed they’ve signed Mauro Icardi on a 4-year contract.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are reportedly paying €50m plus bonuses to Inter.

Those bonuses are understood to be worth between €3m to €7m.

Icardi’s move to PSG could be bad news for Barcelona

Reporter Marcelo Bechler has argued that Icardi’s move to Paris might have a negative impact on Barcelona’s future plans in the transfer market.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for Inter striker Lautaro Martinez.

However, Marcelo Bechler now believes that Inter are in a strong position to reject any offer from Barcelona for their Argentine attacker as they’ve added 50 million euros to their bank account.

According to Marcelo Bechler, there’s now “no urgency” for Inter to sell Lautaro Martinez.

Lautaro Martinez will join Barcelona, say Ole

Ten days ago, Argentinian newspaper Ole published a strongly worded report claiming that Inter’s Lautaro Martinez will join Barcelona.

Ole could hardly be more emphatic with their reporting, labelling the transfer “the dream that will come true”, while telling their readers that “the details of a million dollar transfer are finalised.”

It was also reported that Barcelona and Inter Milan are said to be in constant contact during the pandemic.

Ole say “Lautaro Martínez is very close – too close – to being a Barcelona player.”

Lautaro Martinez has a 111 million euro release clause in his Inter Milan contract, which only expires in 2023.

Icardi: The anti-Juventus clause

It’s also been reported that Inter Milan inserted an anti-Juventus clause into their contract with PSG.

Accordingly, if PSG sell Icardi on in the future to another Italian club, the French club have agreed to pay Inter Milan an additional 15 million euros.

How Icardi’s move will impact Edinson Cavani

Most now believe that Icardi’s transfer to PSG signals the end of Edinson Cavani’s remarkable career at the club.

Cavani, 33, is out of contract in PSG this summer, meaning he’s likely played his final match for the Parisians.

Remember, unlike the Premier League, the 2019-20 Ligue 1 season has been ended due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Cavani is PSG’s all-time record goalscorer.
