Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Leeds United and England midfielder, Kalvin Phillips.

Kalvin Phillips impressing with Leeds

Kalvin Phillips, now 25, has been a mainstay in Leeds’ midfield for many years now.

The Englishman is a Leeds native and came up through their youth ranks. Since breaking into the first-team, Phillips has notched an impressive 224 appearances for The Whites, scoring 14 and assisting 13 in said games.

It is not his goal contributions, though, which have made Phillips such a key cog in Marcelo Bielsa’s side, however.

That has instead been his defensive prowess and his relentless work ethic. This would also earn Phillips a regular starting spot in Gareth Southgate’s England set-up over the last year and a bit.

Why Phillips has turned down Man United

Given his impressive form, Phillips was bound to attract attention from some of the Premier League’s heavy hitters.

And, in a recent report from the Mirror citing the Daily Star, both Liverpool and Manchester United are credited with an interest.

However, the same report claims that Phillips has turned down the advances of Man United due to the rivalry between Leeds and the Red Devils:

Liverpool received a huge boost in their pursuit of Kalvin Phillips, as the midfielder has reportedly turned down the advances of Manchester United, due to their historic status of being Leeds United’s fiercest rivals.

The report provides more detail, stating United were planning a £60m move for Phillips, but Phillips snubbed their advances due to concerns over possible ramifications for his largely Leeds-orientated family:

United were reportedly planning a £60m assault on Marcelo Bielsa’s side to prise the 25-year-old out of Elland Road. However, the Daily Star claim he has snubbed United’s advances, due to his concerns about the possible ramifications for his family members who are mostly Leeds born and bred.
