Edinson Cavani provides injury update

Edinson Cavani would miss out on Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City over the weekend through injury.

The Uruguayan has since provided a detailed update on the issue, which has also seen him miss out on his countries latest round of games this month:

“The issue was like this. Before starting the season, I had discomfort in the tendon. It made me spend a couple of weeks out until I began to gain some minutes [on the pitch] in my team. I had to go back to the national team, always with a bit of pain, but with the hope that it would disappear.

“It was improving but, after Tottenham, it started coming back. “They are difficult injuries. And I decided to have the treatment so that it does not continue to get worse, and to recover as soon as possible to be fit for my team and the national team.”

Why Cavani injury is a big blow

Whilst no timescale has currently been provided, United having Cavani out for any period of time would be a big blow, here’s why.

Manchester United have switched to a 3-5-2 in their last three matches.

So far, due to injury/fitness issues, Cristiano Ronaldo has now had three different partners up top in these games; Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Both Rashford and Greenwood’s stints alongside Ronaldo have proven to be less than impressive.

Rashford looked somewhat out of place in a two-man striker force, whilst Greenwood and Ronaldo struggled to strike up any sort of partnership.

A reason for this may have been due to the fact that CR7 is quite a selfish player and needs people around him to do more selfless work. We saw this at Real Madrid with Karim Benzema and we saw it against Spurs when Cavani played alongside him.

But if Cavani remains out and Solskjaer uses Rashford or Greenwood next to Ronaldo again, another disjointed attacking display from United will likely follow.
