Who will play instead of Matthijs de Ligt as De Boer confirms Juve defender will miss Ukraine match?

Who will play instead of Matthijs de Ligt as De Boer confirms Juve defender will miss Ukraine match?

De Ligt out of Ukraine game

The Netherlands were hit with the loss of Virgil van Dijk ahead of the European Championships and will now be without his prime partner Matthijs de Ligt who will not be risked early in the competition.

“Matthijs de Ligt is not in the selection,” Dutch head coach Frank De Boer said.

De Boer also hinted that he could miss the first few matches. Detailing that should the tournament go on for some time he may be able to become involved.

“Hopefully the tournament will last a long time for us and then we will really need him. If it was the final, we would probably have drafted him, but now we are not going to take any unnecessary risks,” he said.

The Netherlands have an interesting group in which the Ukraine are arguably the best side they will face with Austria and North Macedonia to come.

If they can get away without De Ligt in this match, then De Boar may be confident of resting him until the knockout rounds.

De Boer also confirmed that Ajax veteran keeper Maarten Stekelenburg would be his number 1 throughout the tournament despite having Norwich City’s Tim Krul and AZ’s Marco Bizot.

“Maarten Stekelenburg is our first keeper,” he stated.

Jasper Cillessen stayed home after returning a positive Covid-19 test.

Who comes in for De Ligt?

In De Ligt’s stead, De Boer does have a number of options at his disposal.

Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, Ajax’s Daley Blind, Brighton’s Joël Veltman and Inter Milan’s Stefan de Vrij can all deputise.

De Vrij is arguably the most nailed on starter considering his experience and his title winning credentials from Inter last season.

Blind is likely to play at left-back with Ake coming inside. Although the talented AZ Alkmaar man Owen Wijndal could come into left-back with Blind playing more centrally.

He is much more of an attacking threat than the Ajax man but with the diminished defensive capabilities.

Ukraine will be hoping that Gent’s Roman Yaremchuk can find away through the weakened Dutch defence as they see themselves as the biggest threat to the group favourites.

The Netherlands will however have home advantage playing at Ajax’s Amsterdam Arena. A possible edge which will be a big boost for the Oranje.
