Arsenal ‘agreement’ for Tavares

Arsenal have been targeting a left back cover profile this summer transfer window.

The consistent injury issues faced by Kieran Tierney have left coach Mikel Arteta little choice but to act in the window and is seemingly unable to trust the previously loaned out Sead Kolasinac.

Arsenal were able to sign up Kieran Tierney to a new deal recently and therefore anyone who is brought in will be all too aware of their impending role as a back-up option.

Arsenal have looked at a number of players including Hibernian’s Josh Doig and Southampton’s now free agent Ryan Bertrand.

However the Gunners have reportedly decided to move for Benfica’s 21-year-old Nuno Tavares. The Portuguese youth international came through at the Benfica academy and has been with the Lisbon’s first team since 2019.

He fits the age profile of player the Gunners want and they are now said to have an ‘agreement in principle’ with the Portuguese side for the transfer.

Who is Nuno Tavares?

Many, rather unsurprisingly, may have heard little to nothing of the 21-year-old.

Mainly because he is already used to playing a back-up role to Spanish international Grimaldo at Benfica.

He only earned 625 minutes of football in Liga NOS last season but did play a 5 minute cameo in Benfica’s Europa League defeat at the hands of Arsenal.

Ironically, allowing Bukayo Saka the cross which found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the winning goal.

The Gooner Talk spoke with Portuguese football expert Jose Miguel and he felt that Tavares was not yet ready to play, even as a back-up, for a club of the level of Arsenal.

Instead needing ‘1 or 2’ more seasons playing in the Portuguese league, even on loan at a smaller side than Benfica.

“He needs to maybe play on loan for two seasons here in Portugal for the minor teams and then try impose himself in Benfica and then he can think of a move to a club like Arsenal.”

He also felt that he is not yet ready to be the cover for Tierney should the Scot get injured.

“I do not think Arsenal can see Nuno Tavares as a valid replacement for Kieran Tierney when he gets injured,” said Jose Miguel.
