What Jose Mourinho said about Luke Shaw following Man United defender’s latest impressive England showing

Shaw shines vs Ukraine

England faced off with Ukraine on Saturday evening, in a Euro 2020 quarter-final clash.

The Three Lions headed into the game aiming to book just their second-ever semi-final appearance at the European Championships.

And, when all was said and done in Rome, England did so in very convincing fashion, coming away with a resounding 4-0 victory.

A number of Gareth Southgate’s stars impressed on the day, but perhaps the player of the match was Luke Shaw, who provided two assists:

Mourinho on Shaw

On the back of Shaw’s starring display, Roma boss Jose Mourinho was quizzed on the left-back.

The pair do not have the best relationship, with Mourinho having been heavily critical of Shaw both when he was Manchester United’s manager, and again earlier this summer.

On this occasion, though, speaking post-Ukraine, Mourinho revealed his opinion that the Red Devils defender is getting ‘better and better’:

“Luke Shaw is playing better and better and better.

“I think the back four with the amazing Euros that both central midfielders are doing is more than enough to control Denmark offensively. And then you have four players to decide the creativity of the game.”

The Portuguese also offered an insight into how he feels England should set up vs Denmark in the semi-finals on Wednesday:

“Do England need to play with the back three like against Germany? My answer is no. Germany is a different way to play three at the back. This match doesn’t need England to adapt and match Denmark.

“It is there that Maguire may have some doubts. Raheem Sterling and Kane is clear and there’s two places in my opinion that’s open. Gareth has to make the best decision.

“Jadon Sancho played well, Phil Foden started the tournament, the same with Mason Mount. Jack Grealish – it looks like he’s not the favourite player of Gareth but every minute he’s on the pitch is doing is well.

“I don’t believe it’s needed to play with a back three like they did against Germany.”
