David Moyes

Word stemming from the English media on Monday has pointed towards West Ham United as a potential winter landing spot for out-of-favour Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Ogbonna blow

The need for defensive reinforcements has of course emerged as something of a pressing matter at the London Stadium over the last couple of weeks.

This comes with David Moyes’ high-flying Hammers having been dealt an altogether untimely blow on the personnel front.

Early this month, in a Premier League meeting with, coincidentally, Liverpool, Angelo Ogbonna was forced out of proceedings inside 25 minutes, clutching his knee.

Subsequent medical tests, in turn, confirmed the worst, as word was forthcoming that the Italian had suffered an injury to his Anterior Cruciate Ligament, likely ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Reds star eyed

It should therefore come as little surprise to hear that, ahead of the opening of the January window, the transfer team at West Ham have already begun identifying potential additions to the club’s backline.

Ogbonna, after all, had started all 11 of the club’s Premier League outings prior to his injury issue.

And, as alluded to above, if the latest word doing the rounds in the media on Monday is anything to go by, then one such target being firmly eyed by David Moyes and co. ahead of the 2nd-half of the season is Liverpool star Nat Phillips.

Phillips, who of course established himself as a key contributor amid a defensive crisis at Anfield last season, has since majorly struggled for game-time to this point in the new campaign.

In fact, owing to the summer arrival of Ibrahima Konate, and the return to fitness of both Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Phillips has not been afforded a single league appearance.

West Ham, in turn, are ready to take advantage of the situation, with Football Insider going as far as to claim that the Irons are already ‘laying the groundwork’ for a January deal.

Liverpool, for their part, are not expected to stand in the way of their out-of-favour stopper, should a sufficient proposal be forthcoming.

An offer of around £12 million should be enough to entice the Reds into a deal.
