Valtteri Bottas completed day two of the final Barcelona test fastest for Williams, but it was Mercedes who continued to show their overall strength during pre-season at the Catalunya Circuit

Using the supersoft tyre, Bottas set a time of 1:23.261 which put him three tenths in front of Hamilton, who was running on the harder soft tyre, and his time was the fifth quickest of winter testing so far.

Hamilton ended the day second having run 73 of Mercedes’ 164 laps – with team-mate Nico Rosberg running in the afternoon on a race simulation programme to complete the day eighth.

Although Rosberg finished way down the order, his Tuesday topping time was half-a-second quicker than Hamilton although it remains unclear at this stage what settings and fuel loads the teams were running.

Finishing third was the Renault of Kevin Magnussen, but his time of 1:23.933 on the supersoft was seven tenths down on the table topping time set by Bottas.

McLaren enjoyed another productive day with Jenson Button behind the wheel – with the Woking outfit’s times on the medium tyre putting them roughly 1.5 behind Hamilton on the soft tyre.
