CHRIS WHEELER: Liverpool have seen a £12.5million bid to sign England defender Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton accepted as their recruitment drive continues at pace.

The offer for Clyne, who won the first of his five England caps against Slovenia last November, is understood to be a £10.5m down payment plus £2m in add-ons.

Liverpool have been in the market for a right back after deciding to allow Glen Johnson to leave Anfield at the end of his contract and try to cut short Javier Manquilo’s two-year loan from Atletico Madrid. Clyne, 24, has been strongly linked with Manchester United but now looks primed to join their arch-rivals.

SIMON JONES: Stoke City midfielder Steven Nzonzi will reject the chance to move to Leicester in a £7million deal.

The 26-year-old is keen to play Champions League football if he is to leave The Potters this summer.

Nzonzi, who has one year left on his current contract, has made 120 appearances in all competitions for Stoke since joining the club from Blackburn Rovers in 2012.

ROB DRAPER: Liverpool’s new £29million signing Roberto Firmino has no need to fear the FA’s new work-permit crackdown on foreign players from outside the European Union.

If the 23-year-old plays against Paraguay in the Copa America quarter-final on Saturday night, he will automatically meet the new criteria for a top-10 FIFA-ranked nation of playing in 30 per cent of their games in the past two years.

But Premier League clubs are still at a disadvantage to their European counterparts when it comes to recruiting younger players.

Marseille have grudgingly accepted an offer from West Ham for forward Dimitri Payet, but appear to suggest the approach was made without their permission.

Payet, who has played 15 times for France, is expected to arrive at Upton Park on Thursday to undergo a medical and is set to become new manager Slaven Bilic’s first major signing since succeeding Sam Allardyce at West Ham.

Marseille issued a lengthy statement saying it is ‘absolutely not their intention’ to sell Payet but that they were forced to accept the bid after a dispute with the player and his agent over a new contract.

The French club also appeared to suggest West Ham, whose bid is said to be in the region of £11million, had approached Payet without their permission.

‘Unable to meet this demand, Marseille, through the voice of its president, expressed surprise that negotiations had been opened with another club without alerting Marseille,’ they said.

‘We are very happy,’ he told AM 1050. ‘After much work we can secure the return of Carlos Tevez.’

Ramos is a target for Manchester United, who have made an opening bid understood to be worth around £35million for the centre back.

SIMON JONES: Crystal Palace have made enquiries for Roma striker Mattia Destro but the player is being discussed as part of a swap deal that could see Monaco left back Layvin Kurzawa go to Rome.

Destro spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan and appears to not feature in the plans of Roma boss Rudi Garcia.

The 24-year-old scored three goals in 15 Serie A appearances on loan at Milan.

CHRIS WHEELER: Manchester City are set to make a third bid for Raheem Sterling following Liverpool’s £29million capture of Roberto Firmino.

City were also tracking Firmino but have made Sterling one of their top summer targets and are ready to try again after two unsuccessful bids of £25m and £35m plus add-ons.

It is understood that City’s Abu Dhabi owners have sanctioned a final offer of £40m in cash with bonuses that will push the deal closer to the £50m Liverpool are demanding for the unsettled England star.

…it has emerged that the Brazilian will wear the No 11 shirt at Anfield.

DOMINIC KING: Roberto Firmino has become the second biggest signing in Liverpool’s history – but James Milner will wear the club’s most iconic shirt next season.

The Brazil international – whose £29million move from Hoffenheim was rubberstamped, subject to a medical, in Chile during the early hours of Tuesday morning – has asked for the No 11 jersey, which is the number he wears for his country.

Given the significance of the transfer, there was a feeling Firmino would be handed the No 7 – the jersey made famous by Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez – but that honour will now fall to Milner, who will officially become a Liverpool player on July 1.

PETE JENSON: Manchester United have lodged an opening bid for Sergio Ramos and the Real Madrid defender has asked his club to consider it.

United’s written offer is understood to be around £35million and came as Ramos met with Real Madrid officials on Wednesday morning and reaffirmed his decision to leave the club.

Madrid chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez sat down with the player and his brother and agent Rene Ramos at the club’s Valdebebas training ground but instead of reconciliation the player requested that the club open negotiations with United.
