Tottenham reportedly unlikely to spend in upcoming January window

Tottenham’s impressive summer

Tottenham were one of the more active Premier League sides during the delayed summer transfer window.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was first through the door, with Matt Doherty having followed shortly after.

The Lilywhites were then able to pry Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale away from Real Madrid, though the latter has only joined on loan.

And, after what felt like an age, Spurs finally brought in backup for Harry Kane, landing Carlos Vinicius on a season-long loan from Benfica.

The north Londoners’ final signing of the summer, meanwhile, saw them land Joe Rodon from Swansea during the domestic window.

And such signings, in turn, have since had a solid impact on the campaign being enjoyed by the Lilywhites.

Spurs have booked their spot in a League Cup semi-final, topped their Europa League group, and remain in and around the Premier League title/top-four picture.

Tottenham unlikely to spend in January

A case could nevertheless be made, though, that Spurs are still somewhat lacking in a handful of areas across the pitch.

At right-back for example, it is hard to argue that Spurs couldn’t improve upon Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty.

At centre-back, meanwhile, Davinson Sanchez hasn’t been in great form for some time now, Joe Rodon is relativaly inexperienced and Toby Alderweireld is getting on in years.

Spurs were seemingly well aware of their need for centre-back reinforcements during the summer, with the north Londoners having been heavily linked with a move for Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar.

No move, in the end, was forthcoming, though Tottenham’s fans may have held out hope that a pursuit could be reignited in January.

A recent report from the reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, however, has put a damper on such hopes, with it suggested that Daniel Levy has little intention to spend during the winter window.

Ornstein adds that the only route by which this stance may change is if a member of Jose Mourinho’s squad is sold, and needs replacing.
