Tottenham confirm Ryan Mason is to take charge of the team for the rest of the season

Interim head coach

Amongst all the madness of the ESL being announced over the past 36 hours it is easy to forget that there was some seismic news to come out of north London as Tottenham parted ways with Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was in charge for 17 months but was relieved of his duties just six days ahead of the Carabao Cup Final with Manchester City.

This morning Spurs have moved to announce that Ryan Mason will take charge for the rest of the season.

Mason, who played for Spurs and Hull was forced to retire from football in 2018 following a horrific head injury, steps up from his role of head of player development at the club.

He will be assisted by Chris Powell and Nigel Gibbs while Ledley King stays on as first-team coach and former goalkeeper Michel Vorm returns to the club as a goalkeeping coach.

His first game in charge will be against Southampton on Wednesday night, before the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.

Always be welcome

The end for Mourinho came swiftly. The statement from the club’s chairman Daniel Levy said;

 “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.

On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
