Reds struggles

20-year-old stopper Williams of course exploded onto the scene at Old Trafford last season.

Having long been considered one of the most promising youngsters on the books of United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s youth drive saw the talented left-back handed the chance to impress as part of the club’s first-team squad.

In turn, despite having, at times, struggled for consistency, Williams went on to rack up a none too shabby 37 appearances across all competitions.

As such, it has since come as something of a surprise to see the English youth international struggle so badly for game-time to this point in the new season.

Amid fresh competition from summer arrival Alex Telles, and the form of the resurgent Luke Shaw, Williams has been afforded just a solitary Premier League appearance.

‘Need a strong squad’

Rumours linking the United youth product with a potential January departure from Old Trafford, in turn, had inevitably begun to mount of late.

A host of Premier League clubs, including the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, were credited with an interest in Williams, amid suggestions that a loan exit for the 2nd half of the campaign would help to get his development back on track:

As such, with the transfer deadline fast approaching, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unsurprisingly drawn on his out of favour stopper’s future, during a recent press conference.

After watching his side stumble to a 0-0 draw at Arsenal, though, the United boss went on to reveal that Williams, amid the hectic nature of the fixture list, will in fact be staying put:

‘Brandon will stay. He played [for] the U23’s against Liverpool [on Saturday], he needed the match fitness. He has been working really hard. We don’t have any more players that we feel should be going. We need a strong squad.’

‘It’s a relentless season. We go again on Tuesday. It is like the NBA, we are on the road all the time. We need everyone. The group is tight.’

Solskjaer even went on to hint that the English youngster could be handed the opportunity to impress in the near future:

‘Brandon has been really good lately, working really hard the last few months and he will be ready when the chance comes.’
