Sheffield United reportedly expect no issues in extending Dean Henderson’s loan amid COVID-19 crisis

As per a report from the Sheffield Star, Sheffield United do not foresee any speedbumps in their attempts to secure an extension to Dean Henderson’s current loan deal from Manchester United.

Blades stint

23-year-old shot-stopper Henderson has spent the last couple of seasons on loan with Sheffield United.

After impressing during a stint in League One with Shrewsbury, Henderson subsequently made the step up to the Championship last season, where he went on to play an integral role in Sheffield United’s return to the Premier League.

Across 45 league appearances, the English talent racked up 21 clean sheets, cementing himself as a firm fan favourite at Bramall Lane.

And Henderson’s stellar form has since carried into his first experience of top-flight football.

Amid Sheffield United’s impressive campaign to date, the former Carlisle United youth has conceded just 22 goals across 27 appearances.

This is a defensive record bettered only by top of the table Liverpool.

Henderson expected to stay put

Henderson’s presence between the posts at Bramall Lane for the remainder of the campaign, though, is no longer as clear-cut as it once was.

This comes with the COVID-19 pandemic having thrown contracts across world football into doubt.

The Premier League recently revealed their intention to resume play on the 30th of April, 4 weeks after the originally-planned return date of April 3rd.

This could yet see the campaign, which is likely to take some time before returning to normality, stretch into June or even July.

This poses a problem for clubs dependent on loans, with many temporary deals, including Henderson’s, set to expire on May 31st.

As a result, as things stand, the Englishman is actually due to return to Old Trafford well before the season is likely to be completed.

As outlined above, however, Sheffield United remain confident that the club will face no issues in securing an extension to Henderson’s loan.

According to the Star:

‘Manchester United are expected to honour the loan agreement which saw Dean Henderson return to Bramall Lane last summer, rather than summon him back to Old Trafford at the end of May.’

A ‘gentleman’s agreement’ is expected to be found with Manchester United, whereby Henderson’s Bramall Lane stint will simply be extended until the agreed upon end date for the campaign (this is of course based on the assumption that the season will be completed).
