Shanghai Shenhua move to ward off Man United’s Ighalo interest with mammoth contract offer – Sky

As per a report from Sky Sports News, Chinese powerhouse Shanghai Shenhua have offered on-loan striker Odion Ighalo an eye-watering 2-year contract extension.

Ighalo arrives

The surprise transfer of the winter window came to fruition on deadline day at the end of January.

The signing came for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United, in the form of former Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

Just 24 hours after the Red Devils confirmed the high-profile addition of Bruno Fernandes, Ighalo followed suit, with the Nigerian having put pen-to-paper on a 6-month loan deal in Manchester:

Ighalo was brought to Old Trafford to add some much-needed depth to United’s front-line, on the back of the long-term injury picked up by Marcus Rashford early in January.

Ighalo impressing

The African’s signing, though, was nevertheless viewed by many as a panic-buy upon his arrival at Old Trafford in January.

Such concerns, however, have been firmly put to bed over the weeks since.

Ighalo has, to this point, found the back of the net 4 times in just 3 starts in the colours of United.

The latest of these goals came two weeks ago, when, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak bringing football across Europe to a halt, a moment of brilliance on the part of the 30-year-old saw him open the scoring in the Red Devils’ Europa League drubbing of LASK:

Shenhua return?

Recent days, though, have seen conflicting reports emerge with regards to Manchester United’s plans for Ighalo.

Though it is widely-agreed that the Red Devils have been impressed by their loanee’s production to this point, the extent of the club’s willingness to make his signing permanent remains somewhat unclear.

The Telegraph earlier this week suggested that those in charge at Old Trafford will move imminently to extend Ihalo’s loan beyond its current termination date of May 31st, due to the possibility of the season running into June or even July.

The Daily Mail, though, have gone as far as to claim that United have already come to the decision to open negotiations with Shanghai Shenhua in an attempt to make the striker’s arrival permanent.

As per the latest update courtesy of Sky Sports News this afternoon, though, United’s chase of Ighalo, whether temporary or permanent, could be majorly hampered by the African’s parent club.

It is now claimed that Shanghai Shenhua have offered their on-loan star a two-year contract extension.

This includes a pay rise to a staggering £400,000-per-week, a figure which Manchester United would no doubt be unwilling to match.
