The smiles that have been a feature of the English summer so far will be replaced by snarls during the Ashes if their greatest bowler is anything to go by.
Shane Warne, a close confidante of Australian captain Michael Clarke, took Jimmy Anderson to task for praising the spirit in which England and New Zealand thrilled the cricketing public in all forms of the game.
‘I hope the Ashes is played in the same nature as the New Zealand series,’ said Anderson. ‘That was a really positive series and the nature of both sides cricket was helped by the spirit the game was played in.’

Anderson had previously talked about the positive atmosphere in the series against New Zealand
That was enough to get Warne spluttering. ‘Are you for real Jimmy?’ he said. ‘Seriously? This is the Ashes and I can tell Jimmy now that he is going to cop it from the Aussies more than anyone.
‘When he’s batting it will be 11 against one.’
The tone for the last Ashes was set while Anderson was batting when Clarke told him to ‘stand by for a f****** broken arm’ and as far as Australia’ s No 1 cheerleader is concerned there will be plenty more where that come from this time.

‘I reckon Michael Clarke and his team will carry on from the last series and give it to Jimmy and Stuart Broad,’ Warne told The Sunday Times.
‘There isn’t anyone in world cricket who doesn’t know about Broad’s concerns with the short ball.
‘If you had your time again Stuart, would you really have fessed up in public about this?
‘When either of those two bat the Aussie fielders will be like koalas round a eucalyptus tree.’
Warne is confident Australia will win the Ashes in England for the first time in 14 years ‘because they have more match winners and greater firepower.’
And clearly he will be behind them all the way.
