An update on the potential resumption of the Serie A season has been reported by various sources in the English media on Wednesday.

COVID-19 & football

The coronavirus pandemic has brought football around the world to a near standstill over the last few months.

All of Europe’s top five leagues have been suspended since March, with both the European Championships and Copa America pushed back until next year due to the virus.

However, over the last few weeks, a number of high-profile leagues have begun to take steps towards a return to action.

The Bundesliga is, of course, the closest to a resumption, with Saturday the 16th of May set to see an official return to play for the majority of sides.

La Liga also recently announced that they are eyeing a return in mid-June, whilst the 12th of the same month has been floated around as a potential restart date for the Premier League.

Serie A eyeing June return

Now, as mentioned above, Serie A has become the latest major league to provide a date on which they hope to resume their 2019/20 season.

As per BBC Sport, Serie A plans to resume its campaign on the 13th of June, if Italy’s government approves.

The league’s general assembly is said to have met on Wednesday via videoconference, and approved the date for resumption.

The Italian government’s minister for sport, Vincenzo Spadafora, also stated on Wednesday that teams can start training in groups from Monday:

“A few minutes ago I received a letter from the president of the FIGC [Italian Football Federation] [Gabriele] Gravina, in which he announced that the FIGC had accepted all the comments of the Scientific Technical Committee, readjusting the protocol allowing without other difficulties to resume training from May 18.” As quoted by Goal.

Italy currently has the 5th most confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, with that figure, as of May 13th, just above 222,000.
