Cristiano Ronaldo equalled a Didier Drogba PL benchmark in Man United’s win over Tottenham

Ronaldo enters PL history books

Manchester United played out a resounding win against hapless Tottenham in the English capital tonight, as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s troops earned a 3-0 result at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with star man Cristiano Ronaldo once again getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.

It was the fourth goal of the Premier League campaign for Ronaldo, and his first for United since their 2-1 away win at West Ham back on 19 September. The Portuguese great added an assist to his name in the toppling of Nuno Espírito Santo‘s outfit, and in doing so, equalled a mark held by former Chelsea icon Didier Drogba.

On the back of his performance tonight, Ronaldo became the oldest player in the Premier League to score a goal and register an assist in a single game since Drogba seven years ago in 2014.

Somewhat hilariously, Tottenham were kicked while they were down, too, considering that the pair of strikers both achieved the feat against the north London outfit.

Man United arrest troubling dip in form

But tonight was so much more than just Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet and equalling a record; this is a result that Manchester United desperately needed in a clash between two under-fire managers.

Though Ronaldo played a key role in two of the Red Devils’ three goals tonight, what mattered most was the necessary result for United after the club had been in the midst of a four-match winless run.

Ole’s men had lost three of their last-four outings in the Premier League before this evening, including two abysmal defensive performances in their 5-0 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool, and a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City.

Despite the welcomed result, United already trail domestic rivals Chelsea by eight points, as the Blues are in early command of the table, while the Red Devils also sit 5-points adrift of Liverpool.

With three of their next four Premier League outings coming against Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal, there is perhaps no more crucial period for the Ole Gunnar Solskjær regime than what is to come, if the club hope to kick on after a summer of intent.
