Raphael Varane limps out of Bergamo Bonanza

Raphael Varane managed just 120 minutes or so in between returning from injury, and picking up another for Manchester United.

Completing 90 minutes for the Red Devils in their 3-0 win over Tottenham, he was struck down midway through the first half of their draw with Atalanta in the Champions League, going down off the ball.

What looked like a hamstring strain saw him removed from the action, and replaced by Mason Greenwood as Cristiano Ronaldo produced another last-minute goal to keep Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his job. However, it came at a massive cost, with Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire the only two fit central defenders available to the Norwegian boss for Saturday’s Manchester derby.

So, just how bad is the injury?

Varane reportedly set to miss a month of action

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lamented the loss of Varane, revealing it was a hamstring injury:

“First look at it, he felt his hamstring as he ran there,”

“He didn’t want to risk anything. First assessment doesn’t look good. Fingers crossed.”

And now, as per French outlet L’Equipe, the injury is set to rule the Frenchman out for a month, with the report confirming that he will miss the upcoming internationals before going on to claim:

“The period of unavailability of the French will have to be refined but it should be around 3 to 4 weeks.”

Should this prove the case, Varane will miss Manchester United’s clash with Watford, while he will be touch and go for the key Champions League tie with Villareal and the subsequent game against Chelsea the following weekend.

All of the Manchester United faithful will be hoping he returns in time for that pair of games, with United proving especially poor at the back in recent weeks during his absence.
