There is a new Cuban revolution in the Boston outfield.

Only weeks after acquiring slugging Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes at the trading deadline, the Red Sox landed free agent outfielder Rusney Castillo Friday. Multiple reports said the 27-year-old Castillo signed a seven-year deal (which includes the remainder of the 2014 season) worth $72.5 million.

Castillo is slated to have a physical Saturday, according to a source, and barring any snafus, will play center field for Boston for the remaining five weeks of the season. He’ll join fellow countryman Cespedes in the outfield.

Cespedes plays left field and came to the Sox in the Jon Lester trade with Oakland. Boston is currently in last place in the American League East and on track to miss the playoffs a year after winning the World Series.

Numerous Major League teams scouted Castillo, including the Yankees, Phillies, Cubs, Tigers and Mariners. According to one Yankee source, the Bombers were in on Castillo, but backed off once the bidding shot past the $50 million mark. Boston’s biggest competitor in the Castillo sweepstakes was reportedly Detroit, who is struggling to keep pace with division leader Kansas City in the playoff race.

Castillo bats and throws right and also played second base in his native Cuba. But Boston already has a lock at that position in Dustin Pedroia. The already potent Boston lineup that includes Pedroia, David Ortiz, Cespedes and Mike Napoli, will now welcome another potential big bat in Castillo.

According to several baseball sources, Castillo showed great athleticism during tryouts and is a good defensive outfielder, but had problems with the breaking ball when he was at the plate.

Hip hop mogul Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports, which is partnered with CAA, represents Castillo.
