RB Leipzig will reportedly not be selling Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano this January

Dayot Upamecano will not be leaving Leipzig this January with his side in a title race but will still likely move on in the summer.

Upamecano to stay

The future of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has been one of speculation for a significant period of time now with several clubs interested in buying the former Red Bull Salzburg centre-half.

Premier League clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been credited with an interest in the young French international, however it appears the German side are now determined to keep hold of him with their title challenge on Bayern Munich in full swing.

The 22-year old will be available for a £37.4 million fee in the summer after agreeing a new deal last which saw the inclusion of the release clause inserted into the contract.

RB Leipzig are currently just two points off their title rivals Bayern Munich and will look to take advantage of a dip in form from the Bavarians who were knocked out of the German cup to lower League side Holstein Kiel.

Nagelsmann on RB’s title hopes

Since Julian Nagelsmann has arrived at Leipzig he has led them to a Champions League semi-final and into becoming Bundesliga title contenders. The former Hoffenheim man is one of the youngest coaches in Europe but one of the most inventive and his style of football fits perfectly with the model of young players available at the club.

Leipzig is known for bringing through youth and signing the best in junior quality from around the world including the likes of the aforementioned Upamecano.

With Bayern just a couple of points ahead of them in the title race, Nagelsmann spoke to Bundesliga.com about his hopes of winning a title in the future.

“At the moment it’s looking good. We’re still in every competition, which is the starting point for getting any trophy. The focus has to be consistency. That’s the most important thing. It’s difficult to predict things, but we’re very consistent in all competitions at the moment. We have to maintain that consistency in the league and then we’ll keep pace with the top,” he said.

“Whether that will be enough for a title is something we don’t know and it genuinely does depend on Bayern Munich to an extent, and how consistent they are this year.”

One of the more different challenges which the coach and all the other sides in the league are having to face this season is a lack of a proper winter break. Due to the congestion of fixtures and the upcoming European Championship, typical suspension and fixtures over the Christmas period did not happen.

“This year is an extraordinary challenge and not having a proper winter break is something new for most of these players,” said Nagelsmann. “It’s something we aren’t used to in the Bundesliga and we don’t know how the players will handle that physically. It changes the entire biological rhythm of some players and nobody really knows how that will affect us.”

“We have to maintain the consistency and get luck at important moments to win games that we maybe shouldn’t have or draw ones we could have lost. If that happens we’ll be in the title race for a long time yet. I think every individual player here wants to win a title and we have the hunger to do it, so that will not be a sticking point.”

Even after losing prolific striker Timo Werner to Chelsea in the summer, Leipzig have continued to score goals and have looked a solid force in both the league and in Europe having qualified from thier Champions League group, dropping Manchester United into the Europa League at the same time.
