Rangers chairman Dave King has held talks with Mark Warburton over the vacant manager’s job at Ibrox.

The former Brentford boss, who has also been linked with Fulham, is now the first choice of Rangers directors to succeed interim manager Stuart McCall.

Sportsmail understands no formal offer has yet been put to the Englishman or right-hand man David Weir.

Following informal discussions with the Ibrox board and a further conversation with King, Warburton wants the job and is prepared to lower on his demands.

Valencia coach Ian Cathro is also high on a shortlist which includes Billy Davies and Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes. Warburton’s support among Ibrox fans has swayed Rangers directors and an appointment is expected next week.
