Ralph Hasenhuttl provides Southampton injury update ahead of Aston Villa/ Smith praises Barkley

Aston Villa vs Southampton

Aston Villa and Southampton are set to go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon.

The tie, at first glance, doesn’t look to represent an overly enthralling affair.

However, both outfits have had great starts to 2020/21 and we should be in for a great game.

Villa, for example, began the weekend 4th in the league having won four of their first five outings.

Southampton, after a poor start, have gone unbeaten in four ties, which saw them pick up a point vs Chelsea and a huge win over table-topping Everton.

Southampton team news

Ahead of Sunday’s game at Villa Park, both clubs bosses have been speaking to the media.

First up, Ralph Hasenhuttl would provide an injury update on his squad.

The Austrian confirmed that though all of Will Smallbone, Moussa Djenepo and Mohammed Salisu are back training with the team, this weekend’s game will come too early for them.

“All three (Salisu, Djenepo, Smallbone) are all back in team sessions so far, not all back fit to play but all three are in a good way. This weekend is too early but they are in a good way.”

Smith on Barkley

Elsewhere, Dean Smith has been heaping praise on one of their new signings, Ross Barkley.

Barkley has joined Villa on loan from Chelsea for the season and has hit the ground running in the Midlands.

And when speaking about the midfielder recently, Smith labelled his work ethic and attitude as tremendous:

“He’s someone I felt we needed.

“I look at the Premier League and you need legs in your midfield area because you’ve got to cover a lot of ground in a game. Ross does that.

“He’s got ambitions to get into the Euro squad at the end of the season. With the quality Chelsea have got, they couldn’t guarantee anyone minutes.

“His work ethic and attitude has been tremendous. He brings us that added bit of quality that we needed.”
