Olivier Giroud opens door to Chelsea stay: ‘I’m happy here again’

Chelsea star Olivier Giroud has confirmed that he is ready to put pen-to-paper on a new deal with the club, following an upturn in gametime of late.

Chelsea stint

33-year-old hitman Giroud has been on the books at Stamford Bridge since January of 2018.

After Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s arrival at Arsenal pushed the Frenchman further down the attacking pecking order of the Gunners, Chelsea swooped to secure Giroud’s signature on deadline day.

And the veteran has since gone on to rotate in-and-out of the Blues’ starting XI, amid a number of changes in management.

Giroud’s most telling contribution to the Chelsea cause came last season in Europe, when the World Cup winner notched a hugely-impressive 11 goals and 4 assists en route to Europa League glory.

As outlined above, though, the opening-half of the current campaign saw Giroud majorly struggle for game-time.

New Pensioners boss Frank Lampard had settled firmly on Tammy Abraham as his first-choice centre-forward, with Michy Batshuayi having also sat ahead of Giroud in the attacking pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

This saw the former Arsenal man manage just 2 starts across all competitions by mid-February.

Rampant speculation throughout the winter transfer window, meanwhile, saw Giroud linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge.

The likes of Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Inter Milan were all named as possible January destinations for the Frenchman.

‘A Chelsea player’

As such, even after the winter deadline came and passed with Giroud still a Chelsea player, a summer divorce had appeared an absolute certainty.

The Frenchman’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire this summer, with there having previously been zero incentive for Giroud to consider an extension.

But, as confirmed by the veteran hitman himself today, such a possibility now appears to be very much on the table.

This comes on the back of a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Giroud of late.

Amid a series of injury problems for Tammy Abraham, the outcast has been brought back in from the cold by Frank Lampard.

And Giroud has gone on to take full advantage of his 2nd chance, leading to starts in all of Chelsea’s last 4 fixtures across all competitions.

As such, when drawn on whether he could yet remain at Stamford Bridge beyond the expiration of his contract at the end of the season earlier today, the 33-year-old explained:

‘Yes, of course. There are a few weeks [to go], games to win and maybe another trophy.’

‘And after I think I have two, three nice seasons in front of me. It’s not the time to talk about contracts. But one more time I will take a decision when it comes.’

‘It’s behind me. It was a tough month for me. I just spoke with the manager and I believed what he said, that I would get my chance and he has given me my chance.’

‘I have tried to give his confidence back on the pitch. I do my job the best that I can and I’m very happy to be back in the team. Of course, my confidence is better. The transfer window is behind me. I’m a Chelsea player, I’m happy here again and that’s the most important thing.’
