Official: Watford announce deal for Arsenal-linked Pape Gueye

Premier League outfit Watford have today confirmed the signing of midfield starlet Pape Gueye, who is set to make the move to Vicarage Road this summer.

Le Havre talent

Gueye, 21, has spent his entire career thus far on the books of French outfit Le Havre.

After making his way up through the club’s youth ranks, the starlet first began to showcase his immense potential on the senior stage last season, when Gueye managed 12 league appearances.

It is the current campaign, though, which has seen Gueye go on establish himself as one of France’s most highly-regarded young talents.

Despite having only turned 21 in January, the midfielder, who has represented his country at both U18 and U19 level, cemented himself as an integral member of Le Havre’s starting XI, with a string of impressive displays.

Before the season was curtailed by the COVID-19 outbreak, Gueye had featured in all but 3 of his side’s Ligue 2 outings.

The youngster generally lines out in a defensive midfield role, but is also capable of playing further forward.

Watford bound

Gueye’s form, meanwhile, had unsurprisingly begun to catch the eye of some of Europe’s bigger clubs of late.

One outfit persistently tipped to swoop for the Frenchman had been Arsenal, with reports earlier this year having gone as far as to suggest that a £5 million Gunners deal was close to completion.

As outlined above, however, Mikel Arteta’s men, and any other interested parties for that matter, will now have to look elsewhere, after Gueye committed to one of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals.

As confirmed across social media earlier today, the gifted midfielder has put pen-to-paper on a pre-contract agreement with Watford.

Gueye is set to make the move to Vicarage Road on July 1st, when his deal with Le Havre expires, with the 21-year-old having committed to the Hornets until the summer of 2025.
