Official: Roma announce Jose Mourinho as new head coach, Giallorossi project ‘convinced’ Mourinho

Roma announce Mourinho

In a surprising turn of events today Jose Mourinho was announced as the new head coach of Roma starting from next season.

The current coach Paulo Fonseca is due to leave the club at the end of the campaign having lead the team to a Europa League semi-final in which they are currently 6-2 down after the first leg.

Mourinho was sacked from his job at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the League Cup Final in which Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

In the days following it was announced that he would be joining up with UK based radio and media platform talkSPORT for the Euros this summer.

He will fulfil duties with the company before taking up his role with the Italian club ahead of the new season.

Roma project ‘convinced’ Jose

Mourinho has always teased that a return to Italy could be on the cards.

Speaking in 2019 after leaving Manchester United he said this, “In the future? Always soccer, and always a high level. Italy? Could be a possibility.”

He explained that he would only ever go somewhere if a project was enough to convince him to join.

“Winning a fifth championship in a different country or the Champions League with a third club are things I’d like to do,” he said.

“I wouldn’t do it just for that. I only go where a project convinces me.

“I want to be happy, not necessarily win, I want to be happy and I don’t want to accept a proposal without being convinced of it, that’s what I’ve always thought.

“That’s why if [a club] told me ‘Today there are no conditions to win, but we want you to create the conditions to win,’ then I would evaluate it.”

Mourinho won the treble with inter Milan and made a tremendous impact on the nation’s number one sport.

Roma will be a much greater challenge to compete with the former team of his who have just won the title under Antonio Conte.

Mourinho understands Roma ambitions

Just like his words from 2019, Mourinho indeed confirmed it was the project that had convinced him to join the club.

“After meetings with the ownership, I immediately understood their ambitions for Roma. Together we want to build a winning project,” he said.

“The incredible passion of the fans convinced me to accept the job. I can’t wait to start next season. Daje Roma!”
