Official: 5 Serie A games, including Juventus vs Inter, postponed due to coronavirus fears

As confirmed by Serie A officials this afternoon, 5 Italian top-flight fixtures, including the crunch clash between Juventus and Inter Milan, have been postponed this weekend, due to fears over the spread of the coronavirus.

Juve vs Inter

Tomorrow evening was due to see Maurizio Sarri’s Juve play host to Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, in a Scudetto showdown.

A 3-horse race for the Serie A title has opened up over recent weeks, between the Bianconeri, Nerazzurri, and surprise package Lazio.

Ahead of this weekend, it was champions Juventus who held a slim advantage over 2nd-placed Lazio, with Inter 5 points adrift of Simone Inzaghi’s men.

As such, a victory for the Old Lady in Turin in a little over 24 hours time would have seen Inter slip a full 9 points off the summit, and essentially whittle the race for the Scudetto down to 2.

Coronavirus wreaks havoc

The title hopes of Conte’s men, however, will not be decided this weekend.

As outlined above, the Derby d’Italia showdown was officially postponed a short time ago.

Following a crisis meeting between the Italian government and football authorities, it was decided that Juventus vs Inter, along with 4 other games which had been due to be played behind closed doors, have been postponed.

This comes amid fears over further spread of the coronavirus.

Almost 900 cases of the virus have been confirmed across Italy to this point.

All postponed fixtures are now due to be played out on the 13th of May.
