Newcastle United to bid £8m for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer

Newcastle United to bid £8m for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer

A recent report from England has credited Newcastle with an interest in Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer.

Ajer’s Celtic stint

Kristoffer Ajer has been on Celtic’s books since 2016, after departing his home country of Norway.

When he first moved to Scotland, Ajer was loaned out to Kilmarnock, but has since established himself as a key cog in the Hoops’ backline.

All told, the stopper has managed 170 appearances across all competitions for Celtic, across which he has scored six and assisted five.

Ajer is a centre-back by trade, with 159 of his career outings having come in such a role.

However, the Norwegian is pretty versatile, and can play in a number of other positions, too, including right-back, defensive midfield and as a central midfielder.

Newcastle eyeing Kristoffer Ajer

At just 22 years of age, meanwhile, Ajer appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

His long-term plans at Celtic, though, don’t look all that clear at present.

The stopper will have just one year left on his current contract in the summer, meaning the Bhoys may have to sell him in the upcoming window to ensure that they do not end up losing him for free.

And it appears that at least one Premier League club are keen to land Ajer.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are preparing to launch an £8m bid to sign the 19-time capped international.

Celtic are said to value Ajer highly, but his contract situation has weakened the club’s bargaining power.
