Newcastle set sights on on-loan Arsenal midfielder

Word stemming from the French media on Thursday suggests that Newcastle United are expressing a keen interest in the signature of on-loan Arsenal talent Matteo Guendouzi.

OM stint

French midfielder Guendouzi is of course currently in the midst of a 2nd successive loan spell away from north London.

After spending the 2020/21 campaign in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, the 22-year-old was informed upon his return to the Emirates during the summer that he remained surplus to requirements.

In turn, Guendouzi was sent back out, this time to his home country, committing to a season-long loan with Olympique Marseille.

And, all told, the fiery youngster has since gone on to thoroughly impress.

Across starts in all but one of Marseille’s Ligue 1 outings to this point in the campaign, Guendouzi has lit up the middle of the park at the Stade Velodrome, looking equally competent and brimming with confidence on the ball as he has tenacious off it.

The one-time Lorient man has even begun to add a new element of attacking flair to his game, chipping in with two goals and three assists in Ligue 1 thus far.

St. James’ bound?

In turn, if Guendouzi continues along his current trajectory, it would come as nothing short of a shock if Marseille do not opt to take up their option to buy on the Frenchman next summer.

But, as outlined above, if the latest word doing the rounds in the media is anything to go by, then Jorge Sampaoli’s men may not be able to hold onto him for too long…

As per a report from French outlet Foot Mercato, Guendouzi’s performances this season have drummed up admiring glances on the part of newly-minted Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

The Magpies are understood to hold a keen interest in the 22-year-old’s signature, ready to offer their Marseille counterparts the opportunity to secure a quick profit on the 11 million euro fee owed to Arsenal.

Significantly, however, it is also added that, as things stand, Guendouzi himself remains settled and happy with life in southern France.
