Napoli unlikely to sign Chelsea’s Tiemoue Bakayoko when loan expires

Napoli unlikely to sign Chelsea’s Tiemoue Bakayoko when loan expires

West London return

It is easy to forget that, back in 2017, Tiemoue Bakayoko was impressing for Monaco on both the domestic and European stage.

Chelsea signed him for £40m, and hoped the Frenchman would help them to dominate the Premier League in retaining the title they had just won. He was, at the time, the club’s second most expensive signing after Fernando Torres.

Fast forward 4 years, and one could be forgiven for completely forgetting that Chelsea still own the player. He is still only 26 years old, and is under contract with the Blues until June 2022. Despite playing 29 times in his first season at Stamford Bridge, Bakayoko was loaned to AC Milan the following summer, before joining Monaco, and most recently Napoli.

Reports in Italy today, though, suggest that there is no chance that Napoli will purchase the midfielder, as he has dropped out of the first-team picture at the club.

A return to France may be his next step, with PSG and Lyon possible destinations.

Tuchel Lifeline

Whilst it seems like there is almost no chance of Bakayoko returning to Chelsea to compete for a space in what is an already crowded midfield, Sports Witness claim that Thomas Tuchel may want to keep him.

The article also suggests that there will be no market for the 26-year-old in Italy, after he failed to establish himself in Serie A. A return to France is therefore again touted.
