Mikel Arteta provides Thomas Partey update and confirms Arsenal’s penalty pecking order after Aubameyang miss

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has, on Sunday, provided a pair of noteworthy updates on his squad, on the back of their downing of Watford.

ESR makes the difference

The Gunners marked their return to action a short time ago, welcoming Claudio Ranieri’s Watford to the Emirates for a Premier League showdown.

Arteta and co. headed into proceedings aware that a 3rd win on the bounce would, at least temporarily, guide them into joint-4th in the English top-flight, a remarkable turn of events since slipping to three consecutive defeats to open the campaign.

And, when all was said and done, secure yet another crucial 3-point haul is exactly what Arsenal managed.

A solitary strike on the part of Emile Smith Rowe, netted ten minutes into the 2nd-half, ultimately proved enough to down a game Watford outfit.

After the ball dropped the way of the English midfielder on the edge of the area, Smith Rowe made no mistake with a pinpoint right-footed finish beyond the helpless Ben Foster:

Partey latest

Amid an otherwise positive afternoon’s work for Arsenal on Sunday, though, there were also a number of concerns forthcoming for Mikel Arteta’s men.

First, ahead of kick-off, it was revealed that key midfielder Thomas Partey was set to play no part, after picking up a fitness problem.

In turn, speaking in his post-match press conference this evening, Arteta was inevitably asked for an update on Partey’s wellbeing.

But the Gunners boss was keen to keep his cards close to his chest, giving little away in simply confirming that the Ghanaian has suffered a ‘muscle injury’:

Elsewhere, concern surrounding the wellbeing of Takehiro Tomiyasu too spread on the back of the full-time whistle in north London, a situation you can read more about here.

And last up when it came to the talking points of a negative nature for Sunday’s hosts was the latest spot-kick miss on the part of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

After seeing his central effort well kept out by Ben Foster, it was subsequently revealed that ‘Auba’ has now missed four of the thirteen penalties which he has taken for Arsenal in the Premier League.

Such an alarming ratio, in turn, had culminated in suggestions this evening that the Gabonese could soon be replaced as the Gunners’ go-to option from twelve yards.

If the latest comments on the part of his manager are anything to go by, however, then such a development, as things stand, appears unlikely:
