Mikel Arteta provides injury update on Emile Smith Rowe & discusses how he will use Saka

Mikel Arteta has recently discussed Smith Rowe’s fitness and how he will use Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal down Southampton

Arsenal were in Premier League action on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners faced off with Southampton for a second time in the space of a week after being knocked out of the FA Cup by the Saints over the weekend.

However, despite the loss in the cup, Arsenal actually headed into the tie in solid form – notching four wins and a draw from their previous five Premier League outings.

And at St Mary’s, that solid run would continue in rather convincing fashion.

Arsenal were without the services of a key man, Kieran Tierney, but Cedric would do a superb job filling in at left-back, playing a key role in Arsenal’s eventual 3-1 win.

Nicolas Pepe would cancel out Stuart Armstrong’s opener eight minutes in. This was followed by Bukayo Saka firing the Gunners into the lead just before the break.

Saka then turned provider in the second half, teeing up Alexandre Lacazette to round off a solid win:

Mikel Arteta on Smith Rowe

On an otherwise positive evening, the north Londoners did appear to be dealt a blow on the personnel front.

Emile Smith Rowe has been crucial to Arsenal’s recent aforementioned success, but did look in some discomfort when forced off 72 minutes in:

Mikel Arteta has since provided an update on the Arsenal youngster, confirming Smith Rowe had some muscular discomfort:

“He was injured for the cup game, we knew he could probably not play the whole game today. He had some muscular discomfort and had to come off.”

There has been no update regarding Smith Rowe’s potential involvement for Arsenal vs Manchester United on Saturday.

Elsewhere, the Spaniard has been discussing where he believes Saka is best utilised. And though he admitted that was in attack, Arteta also conceded he may have to cover at left-back as well:

“I think he’s much better when he plays in the last line of our attack. The truth is that we have only one left-footed full back and sometimes we’ll have to use him there. It’s good for his development as well to play there.”
