Mikel Arteta confirms Emiliano Martinez likely to start FA Cup final vs Chelsea

Mikel Arteta has recently moved to provide some insight into his selection choice between the sticks for Arsenal’s upcoming FA Cup final clash with Chelsea.

Martinez impressing

The restarted Premier League got off to an absolute nightmare start for the Gunners.

Arteta and co. found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline vs Manchester City on the opening week back.

Arsenal also sustained a fair few injuries during the first two ties back, one of which looked set to be rather costly.

Bernd Leno has been one of the few bright sparks in the north Londoners previously dismal backline.

So when the German was stretchered off just two games into the restarted campaign, Arsenal fans probably feared the worst.

However, Emiliano Martinez, the man tasked with filling Leno’s boots, has since gone on to put on some simply sensational displays for Arsenal, including vs Watford on Sunday.

Martinez to start vs Chelsea in FA Cup final

But with Bernd Leno seemingly edging back to full fitness, many may have assumed that Martinez would lose his spot for Arsenal’s upcoming FA Cup tie this weekend.

However, as mentioned above, Arteta has all but confirmed that it will be Martinez starting between the sticks at Wembley.

Speaking post-Watford (watch the full press conference below), the Spaniard was drawn on if Martinez will be the one in the driving seat for the Cup Final, to which Arteta responded:

“Emi has earned his place with another brilliant performance again today. When the team needed him he made some fantastic saves.

“Bernd is still recovering from his injuries so Emi’s the one now.”

And when pressed on those comments, Arteta went on to state that if Martinez is available, he will start the final:

“In football next week is too much. Let’s hope that he’s available for the game and if that’s the case he will start the final.”
