Manchester City advance to the semi finals after suffering an early scare thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden

Quadruple still on

Phil Foden justified his selection in the Manchester City starting eleven as his 75th minute strike from the edge of the box ensured that Pep Guardiola’s men will meet PSG in the Champions League semi-finals.

City had exited the competition at this stage in each of the last three seasons, but that is in the past now as they make the semi finals for the first time under Pep Guardiola.

City won 2-1 on the night, with Riyad Mahrez’s penalty the other goal, and 4-2 on aggregate. Phil Foden scored the winning goal in both legs of the tie.

Borussia Dortmund took the lead on the night in the 15th minute when 17 year old England international Jude Bellingham produced a fine strike after Erling Haaland pulled the ball back to him. He took one touch to control it, shifted it on to his right foot and smashed it into the top corner.

In scoring he became the youngest Englishman to score in the tournament and the second youngest to score in a Champions League knock out game.

Dortmund finished the first half 2-2 in the tie and ahead on away goals, despite City having numerous efforts on goal including Kevin De Bruyne hitting the cross bar.

City got back in the lead in the 51st minute when Can was adjudged to have handled in the area and Riyad Mahrez converted from the penalty spot.

City Through

City took more care with the ball following their goal but in the 74th minute Kevin De Bruyne forced a fine save from the Dortmund keeper Marwin Hitz.

However from the resulting corner, Phil Foden smashed it home from the corner of the box to set off scenes of jubilation amongst the City players and bench as Foden celebrated with Pep Guardiola.

So Pep Guardiola’s team will play PSG in a mouth watering semi-final clash as both sides look to add the Champions League trophy to their trophy cabinet.

The stars on show should make it one for all football fans to look forward to with great anticipation.
