Man United’s Luke Shaw credits Solskjaer with key role in reviving his career

Luke Shaw has recently been discussing the impact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had on turning his career around.

Shaw’s Man United stint

Luke Shaw joined Manchester United back in the summer of 2014.

The Englishman was just 18 at the time, with the Red Devils having splashed out an initial fee of £27m to land the then-Southampton man.

Shaw had impressed in 67 appearances across all competitions for the Saints, and given the fact that he was both young and English, there was, as is so often the case with starlets in England, a fair bit of hype and expectation attached to the full-back when he joined Man United.

However, the now 24-year-old’s stint at Old Trafford has been far from plain sailing.

In Shaw’s defence, since moving to Manchester, the defender has been plagued with injury issues, forcing him to miss a reported 113 of United’s games.

But even when fit, the eight-time capped international has often struggled to perform whilst on United’s books.

Shaw’s inconsistent displays would often result in public criticism from ex-Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

Shaw praises Solskjaer

However, as mentioned above, Man United’s current boss has, apparently, played a key role in helping Shaw to revive his career.

Shaw has featured 26 times at club level this term, and has been particularly impressive when playing as the left-sided centre-back in a back-five.

And, according to Shaw himself, it is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has helped to provoke such stellar displays.

When asked how important a role the Norwegian tactician has played in his career, Shaw stated:

“A massive one. He’s helped me a lot on the pitch, but more so he’s been one of the biggest influences off the pitch too, with the way he handles players.

“He knows what players need. I had a difficult couple of years before he came in; I think maybe he realised that and knew what I needed. He’s really helped me off the pitch. He obviously believes in me, he tells me that. That’s the confidence you need as a player: to have the manager believe in you.”

Shaw would also highlight his positive relationship with Solskjaer off the pitch, something one would imagine he didn’t share with Mourinho:

“We also get on really well, and that’s a key thing: your relationship off the pitch.

“I know he’s the manager, and we all have massive respect for him, but it’s also important to have a nice relationship off the pitch too sometimes, when things aren’t too serious.”
