Man United’s Anthony Martial bags classy France assist, before limping off

Manchester United have been dealt a potential blow on the personnel front this afternoon, after Anthony Martial limped out of France’s meeting with Kazakhstan.

Blues cruise

Didier Deschamps’ men made the trip to the Astana Arena a short time ago.

The clash marked Les Bleus’ second 2022 World Cup qualifier, as the champions get the long road towards retaining their crown underway.

France actually headed into proceedings in search of a bounce-back result, after stuttering to a disappointing 1-1 draw with Ukraine during the week.

And, when all was said and done in Nur-Sultan, bounce back is precisely what the visitors managed.

A predictably dominant display eventually saw Deschamps and co. emerge on the right side of a 2-0 scoreline, to take their place atop the Group D table.

In-form Barcelona wide-man Ousmane Dembele set France on their way inside 20 minutes, latching onto Anthony Martial’s classy turn and assist to rifle home into the far corner:

Then, on the stroke of the interval, it was two.

Just seconds after doing brilliantly to deny Martial what looked a certain goal, Serhiy Malyi nodded a whipped corner from the left into his own net:

And this brought an end to the afternoon’s scoring, with Kylian Mbappe’s missed 2nd-half spot-kick the closest either side came to adding to the eventual final scoreline.

Man United concern

An otherwise positive day’s work for France, however, as outlined above, was soured ever so slightly by a blow on the personnel front.

This came early in the 2nd-half, when Anthony Martial went to ground in evident pain, on the back of a challenge on the edge of the hosts’ penalty area.

The hitman, to his credit, managed to make his way back onto the field of play, before carrying on for a further 5 minutes or so.

However, it was eventually decided that he was not in a fit state to continue, with Martial, favouring his knee, having gone on to limp off on the hour mark, to be replaced by Kylian Mbappe.
