Roberto Firmino opens up on how Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has made him a better player

Firmino credits Klopp with progression

Brazilian international Roberto Firmino spoke about the effect that Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has had on him at Anfield since the former Bundesliga pair linked up on Merseyside in 2015.

Firmino arrived that summer from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim after back-to-back standout seasons for the Sinsheim-based outfit, while Klopp rocked up at Liverpool just a few months later in October.

But the pair had dealings while both plied their respective trades in Germany, and Firmino spoke fondly about his current boss when being interviewed by Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte;

“In addition to being an excellent coach, Klopp is a sensational guy, with a huge heart. And I can say that, if I’m a better player today, it’s a lot thanks to him.

We’ve known each other since German football and, here at Liverpool, we’ve been together for six years.

Today, I feel comfortable playing in more than one position, I have more freedom to move and also help with marking.”

An underrated master

Though he may not have the same clout as fellow Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino is as important as any piece of the puzzle under Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

The Brazilian false-nine, who first plied his trade in Germany in a number ten role for Hoffenheim, has morphed into one of the finest examples of a mobile center-forward who is so much more than a goalscorer.

Recent praise from his boss after Liverpool’s demolition job against Manchester United spoke to the German’s appreciation for his number 9, while Firmino remains one of the most under-appreciated forwards in Europe.

He may not be producing the goals that a main striker should at a club of Liverpool’s stature, but Firmino has the near-unmatched tactical balance of a forward able to link play, create chances, press well, and offer a well-rounded platform that allows players like Mo Salah and Sadio Mané to shine in front of goal.

He will never hit high goal figures for Liverpool, but make no mistake; Roberto Firmino is as key as anyone.
