Liverpool’s defensive woes

The last few weeks have been something of a nightmare for Liverpool.

The Reds’ injury luck has been pretty dreadful, with a number of their top stars currently sidelined.

The headline news recently was, of course, that Virgil van Dijk was expected to miss the majority of the campaign after suffering an injury in the Merseyside derby back in October.

This was followed by Fabinho, who had begun deputising at centre-back in van Dijk’s absence, suffering a hamstring injury.

And as if things couldn’t get any worse for Jurgen Klopp and co., both Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also since picked up injuries, with the former also expected to miss a good chunk of the current campaign.

Liverpool want to sign van Dijk & Fabinho to new deals

This has since been followed by Mohamed Salah testing positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

As a result, the mood around Liverpool is unlikely to be too positive right now.

However, the Liverpool faithful have been handed something of a boost in recent days.

Said boost comes in the form of some potential contract extensions to some of Liverpool’s top stars.

Speaking on the latest edition of his Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano reported that he expects Liverpool to start official contract negotiations with both van Dijk and Fabinho in the coming months:

They want to extend his contract, they want van Dijk for the future. They are starting to talk, they are starting to have a direct contact with the agents of van Dijk.

So I expect Liverpool in the next months, to start official negotiations to extend the contract of van Dijk as with Fabinho also we said last week.
