Liverpool could face Leeds or West Brom in 2020 Community Shield – Times

Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool crowned champions

After a simply sensational campaign which has seen Jurgen Klopp’s men notch a staggering 92 points after 34 games, Liverpool have clinched their first-ever Premier League title.

The Reds blew last season’s champions, Manchester City, completely out of the water, and currently boast a 23-point lead over the Citizens.

Coincidentally, it was actually Pep Guardiola’s men who handed Liverpool their crown, with the Sky Blues’ 2-1 loss to Chelsea at the back end of June having made it mathematically impossible for the runaway leaders to be caught.

Liverpool are also still very much in with a chance of besting City’s record-breaking 100-point season, with four games left to play.

Liverpool to face Leeds or West Brom in Community Shield?

After winning their first Premier League title, Liverpool are now, of course, set to take part in next season’s Community Shield clash.

However, the 2019/20 campaign being delayed by the COVID-19 outbreak means that we could be set for a very different curtain-raiser in the summer.

The Community Shield is normally played out between the winners of the English top-flight and the side who clinched the FA Cup that year.

According to The Times, though, The FA has pencilled in August 23rd as a possible date for the event, with this date set to conflict with the Champions League final.

Should Arsenal or Chelsea end up winning the FA Cup, then there would not be an issue.

However, in the case that one of Manchester City or Manchester United win the FA Cup, and then reach the Champions League or Europa League final, there could be some problems.

Should one of the above scenarios indeed play out, The Times report that the FA will look for another team from within the English league to take part in the 2020/21 season opener.

And one possibility being taken into consideration could see the winners of the Championship invited to face Liverpool.

As things stand, West Brom are sat atop England’s second division, though Leeds will return to the summit if they win their game in hand on Thursday.
