Liverpool confirm Diogo Jota signing/Thiago reportedly set Reds back initial fee of just £5 million

Premier League champions Liverpool have this evening confirmed the signing of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Reds making moves

In something of a bolt from the blue on Friday, word began to do the rounds in the media that Portuguese attacker Jota had been identified as a firm target for Jurgen Klopp and co.

Such claims were swiftly followed by mounting speculation that the Wolves star was not only inching towards Anfield, but was in fact on the verge of securing a move to Merseyside.

A lack of depth behind the trio of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino posed a major problem for Liverpool heading into 2020/21, with the campaign’s reduced duration set to see fixtures come thick and fast for the Premier League’s elite.

As such, targeting a player of Jota’s versatility, with the 23-year-old capable of lining out on either flank or in a more central role, made sense for the English champions.

And, as outlined above, it certainly hasn’t taken long for a deal to come to fruition.

Just a day after the initial emergence of the links between club and player, Liverpool have announced Jota’s signing.

The former Atletico Madrid man has put pen-to-paper on a long-term contract at Anfield, for a fee which could eventually reach £45 million:

Thiago latest

Jota’s arrival of course marks the 2nd at Liverpool in the space of the last 24 hours, after the Merseysiders finally secured the long-awaited arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Spanish midfielder Thiago has long been considered one of world football’s finest in his position, with his signing therefore understandably viewed as quite a coup.

if the latest word stemming from the English media on Saturday is to be believed, though, then what has since been hailed as a superb piece of work on the part of Michael Edwards and the transfer chiefs at Anfield in fact proved even more impressive than was first thought.

As per a report from the reliable James Pearce of The Athletic, Liverpool’s Thiago payment will be spread across the duration of his contract with the club.

This means that, incredibly, the Reds forked over an initial fee of just £5 million to bring the Spaniard to England:
