Liverpool believe a Premier League rival leaked club’s furlough plans – Athletic

Liverpool reportedly believe that their ‘hand was forced’ when it came to the club’s announcement regarding furloughing members of non-playing staff, after a Premier League rival leaked the information following a confidential meeting.

‘The wrong conclusion’

Ongoings at European champions Liverpool have proven the talking point of European football over the last week.

This comes following a pair of announcements on the part of the Reds over the space of 48 hours.

First, on Saturday evening, Liverpool confirmed that the club had opted to follow the lead of the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham, by placing a host of the club’s backroom staff on furlough.

This decision inevitably resulted in a swift public backlash, as fans, pundits and former players alike quickly called into question the ethics behind one of world football’s biggest clubs making use of a government scheme to pay their staff during an international crisis.

As a result, it didn’t come as a huge surprise when the Reds opted to reverse their decision, less than 48 hours later.

A statement on Monday afternoon saw chief executive officer Peter Moore confirm that Liverpool had ‘come to the wrong conclusion’ in furloughing members of non-playing staff, with the club ‘truly sorry’ for their actions:

‘We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week to announce that we intended to apply to the Coronavirus Retention Scheme and furlough staff due to the suspension of the Premier League football calendar, and are truly sorry for that.’

Liverpool ‘leak’

As outlined above, however, Liverpool’s original announcement regarding their furlough decision may actually have been influenced by one of the club’s Premier League rivals.

The reliable James Pearce of the Athletic has revealed that the hierarchy at Anfield feel their ‘hand was forced’ into releasing Saturday’s statement, before they had intended to do so.

It is claimed that the Merseyside giants had hoped to inform all affected members of staff of their decision, before the information was made public.

However, one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals have been accused of ‘leaking’ their intentions early, forcing the hand of the European champions.

This came despite discussions over the subject of furlough having been held in what was considered a ‘confidential’ meeting between the English top-flight’s clubs.
