Kyrie Irving agrees to $90 million extension with Cavaliers – Yahoo Sports

Kyrie Irving agreed to a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers that secures the star point guard as a cornerstone of the franchise.

Irving made the commitment early Tuesday during a meeting in New York with team officials, including new coach David Blatt. Blatt and associate head coach Tyronn Lue outlined their offensive vision for the team during the meeting.

Blatt and Lue “were incredibly impressive,” Irving’s agent, Jeff Wechsler told Yahoo Sports. “That’s what helped sell Kyrie on taking this deal.”

Irving has one year remaining on his current contract. He can’t sign the extension, which will take him through the 2019-20 season, until July 10 when the league’s free-agent moratorium ends.

“Kyrie is looking forward to growing with the organization and city of Cleveland over the next six years,” Wechsler told Yahoo Sports.

Irving and Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert also tweeted their confirmation of the deal early Tuesday.
