Justin Rose lost out at the third extra hole in his bid to claim the prestigious Memorial tournament at Muirfield Village.
Fighting his swing all day, the Englishman used all his experience and dug deep to force a sudden death play-off against Swede David Lingmerth.
Despite holing a 25ft putt for an unlikely par at the first extra hole, however, Rose paid the price for one pushed drive too many and the resultant bogey at his 21st hole handed victory to the little-known Scandinavian.

It was not only going so close that will prove a bitter pill for Rose. The Englishman also became the latest European golfer to suffer an unseemly bout of heckling, which clearly cost him a stroke at the 14th.
Given that, ultimately, proved the difference between winning and a play-off, surely the PGA Tour will now take firm action after Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter have also been targeted in recent weeks.
‘I can’t believe it,’ the 27-year-old Swede said. ‘I’m so happy right now I don’t know where to go.’
He’ll be going to the Masters next year for the first time – but not the U.S. Open in two weeks. Lingmerth moves to No. 71 in the world and still has to qualify Monday.
It was the longest playoff in 40 years of the Memorial, and it could have ended much earlier – or been avoided – if not for so many clutch moments.
