Jos Buttler has been left out of the remainder of the one-day series against Australia, with the wicketkeeping duties passing to Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow.
Buttler has cut an increasingly tired figure this summer, and his poor batting form in the Ashes spilled over into the first two one-day internationals at Southampton and Lord’s, where he made four and nought.
Coach Trevor Bayliss said: ‘While we initially felt Jos would have enough left in the tank for this ODI series, it has become clear in the last couple of days that he will benefit from a break from cricket ahead of the winter tours.’

Jonny Bairstow (right), who played for Yorkshire Vikings on Sunday, will take over as wicketkeeper
Bairstow, who might have considered himself unfortunate not to be picked until now after sealing the one-day series against New Zealand in June with an unbeaten 83 off 60 balls at Chester-le-Street, will get a chance to stake his claim for a permanent role behind the stumps this winter.
England take on Australia at Old Trafford on September 8, before the last two ODIs at Headingley on September 11, and back at Old Trafford, on September 13.
The team will play Pakistan in October and November, before travelling to South Africa in December for another overseas adventure until the end of February.
