Is Donnarumma closer to Milan exit after Maignan agrees to join till 2026?

Milan pounce with Donnarumma future unclear

Gianluigi Donnarumma appears to be edging closer to the exit door at AC Milan, with the Italian club on the verge of signing a replacement.

Donnarumma’s contract in Milan is set to expire at the end of June, and the 22-year-old ‘keeper is yet to show any interest in signing a new deal, with Juventus, Barcelona and Chelsea all linked with free transfer for the goalkeeper.

But it seems as if Milan are no longer happy to sweat on the future of their star player only to be left high and dry, and have moved pre-emptively for Lille shot-stopper Mike Maignan in a deal worth around €15 million plus incentives.

This deal likely means that the Rossoneri are resigned to losing Donnarumma for nothing this summer, but in of itself it is an impressive signing.

How do the two compare?

Mike Maignan has just come off the back of a very impressive season for LOSC Lille, who lifted the title on the final day of the season. Maignan was an ever-present in between the sticks for his side, keeping 23 clean sheets in a watertight Lille defence.

Whilst the Frenchman has made fewer total saves than Donnarumma this campaign, his save percentage is almost 10% higher [all stats are taken from FBREF, view a comparison of the two goalkeepers here].

This means that although Maignan has had less to do (due in no small part to the form of Sven Botman and Jose Fonte in front of him), he has a better chance of keeping out shots that are taken than the seemingly outbound Milan goalkeeper.

Maignan has also saved more goals for his side. Post shot expected goals (PSxG) minus goals allowed is a metric used to see the quality of chances that goalies are keeping out, with a higher number generally indicating more luck or better ability.

While both goalkeepers are positive in this regard, according to, Maignan’s value of 4.8 is almost 2 better than Donnarumma’s 2.7, suggesting that the Frenchman could well be an upgrade for his new side.

Although it remains to be seen where the future of Gianluigi Donnarumma lies, the San Siro club have acted swiftly and decisively to ensure that they are not left without a competent shot-stopper ahead of next season, where they will be back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
