“I think he knows exactly what he has in us.” Leipzig director retorts Konate to Liverpool claims

Leipzig bullish in Konate exit claims

Reports surfaced yesterday that Liverpool were closing in on a possible deal for RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate. The 21-year-old defender has been away with the French under 21s during the international break but a possible move to the Premier League has seemingly materialized during the same time.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool had been working to sign the young Frenchman to support their frail defensive back line which has experienced a number of high-profile injuries to players such as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

However, RB Leipzig director Markus Krösche has come out and said that he is expecting Konate to remain with the club.

“I don’t think that’s an issue for ‘Ibo’. He still has a long-term contract with us. I think he knows exactly what he has in us. And we know what we have in him,” said Krösche.

“He’s an extremely important player, who has a lot of potential, and we want to help him develop further.”

RBL will want to avoid losing Konate at all costs considering the fact that they are already resigned to losing Dayot Upamecano to Bayern Munich in the summer.

RBL history of denial

This is not the first time that the German-based club have denied transfer rumours only for a player to eventually leave the club in the summer. Leipzig were unable to hang onto star striker Timo Werner who left the club for Chelsea but had previously been linked with a move to Liverpool of which directors at the club also denied at the time.

“There have been no enquiries, and Timo didn’t contact us either,” said Krösche when links with Liverpool and Werner surfaced. “These rumours have been around for weeks. As of now, there is nothing new.”

Timo Werner

When Chelsea were then linked with Werner, again RBL denied it with managing director Oliver Mintzlaff saying no buyout clause had yet been activated for the former Stuttgart player.

“We haven’t had an exchange yet,” he said “Accordingly, we have nothing to report.

“Timo Werner is a player for RB Leipzig. He signalled a few weeks ago that he was busy with a transfer. Until now nothing is done.”

Werner eventually did leave for Chelsea and did not play for RBL during their Champions League run to the semi-finals when they were knocked out by PSG.
